I am here to help you bounce back through treatments supported by scientific evidence, which may include medication, therapy, or both.

I collaborate with patients to integrate their life story, strengths, and values to support them in their unique journey towards personal growth and healing. I have psychopharmacological expertise in managing mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders.

I offer psychiatric evaluation, and medication management on its own, or in combination with therapy. If you’re already working with a therapist, but need a psychiatrist to manage your medication treatment, I can help.

Female, Muslim psychiatrist and therapist based in Virginia

Hi, I’m Fatima Noorani, MD, a psychotherapist and psychiatrist supporting adults in the DMV area in their journey toward a more balanced, fulfilling, and meaningful life.

Seeking out help can be difficult given the biases, stigma, and barriers surrounding mental health care.

I’m here to support you in your wellbeing and healing in a safe and non-judgmental environment.

My Approach to Psychiatry

Mental health disorders are multidimensional involving a complex and dynamic interplay between genetics, environment, temperament, culture, and other factors.

That’s why I use the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model of care to inform evaluation and treatment planning.

I believe that judicious use of medications, with close monitoring and support, can help in alleviating suffering and improving quality of life.

Though I will recommend the approach best supported by scientific data, your choice of treatment modality is a personal decision.

Who I work with

I work with adults of all ages, from all backgrounds and walks of life.

I have extensive experience working with multicultural and BIPOC clients, as well as pregnant and postpartum clients.

Ways to work with me as your Psychiatrist

  • Initial Psychiatric Evaluation

This comprehensive diagnostic evaluation helps me to understand your current challenges so I can provide you with a holistic treatment plan.

I offer this as a standalone service, and you’ll also have the option of continuing on with therapy and/or medication management.

  • Medication Management

After the Initial Psychiatric Evaluation, we’ll meet periodically, as needed, to manage your medication.

If you’re already working with a therapist, but you need a psychiatrist to manage your medication treatment, I can help.

  • Psychotherapy

Unlike many psychiatrists, I also offer psychotherapy. Some clients appreciate the convenience and ease of having their mental health care streamlined with one mental health care provider.

Combination treatment—therapy plus medication—has been shown to be a more effective treatment modality for many psychiatric disorders than medication alone.

FAQ

  • Both. I prefer that we meet in-person in my McLean, VA office for our first session. After that we can decide together what works best for treatment.

  • Before our first visit, you will receive forms to complete, sign and send back via patient portal. Our first 1-3 sessions are consultation appointments, part of the Initial Psychiatric Evaluation. During this period, we will collaborate to gather information to decide if you need treatment, and what type.

By the end of the initial assessment period, we will determine if we would like to continue working together. If so, I will become your therapist and/or treating psychiatrist. If at any point during treatment, we determine that you would be better served by receiving treatment from a different provider, this will be discussed and referrals will be provided.

  • The length of time of treatment is variable depending on what we are working on and how you are doing or feeling. For psychotherapy, meeting weekly for at least 15-20 sessions or 6 months is recommended as that time frame is most likely needed to produce growth and change.

  • Fees vary based on type of service and length of appointment.

Initial Psychiatric Evaluation, Session 1, 90 minutes: $450

    Therapy only, 45 minutes: $250

Therapy with Medication Management, 45 min: $250

Medication Management only, 25 minutes: $200

  • Yes. I am an in-network provider with Carefirst BCBS (all plans) and Anthem BCBS (PPO plans only) ONLY. I do not work with any other insurance carrier. For more information about using your insurance for my services, please refer to the Financial Policy.

If you have any other insurance plan, I would be considered an out-of-network provider and unable to file claims directly with insurance. You are encouraged to submit reimbursement claims to your insurance and utilize any out-of-network benefits.

You will be provided with a specialized invoice that contains all information necessary to submit claims for out-of-network reimbursement.

  • You have a right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Please refer to the Good Faith Estimate Policy for further information.

  • Yes, there are times where medications are necessary. Before we consider starting a medication in treatment, we will first ensure that other potential non-medication strategies are considered. Prior to starting, I will discuss the risks and benefits of the medication so that you can make an informed decision.

Though I will recommend the approach best supported by scientific data, choice of treatment modality is a personal decision. Implementing any treatment must be adapted carefully to meet the specific needs of the person seeking treatment.

  • There may be times when medications alone can be helpful, but the vast majority of the time, combination care (medication and therapy) shows the best results.
